Andie & Darren's Yarra Valley Wedding

How did you meet your (now) husband? I was playing in a social mixed netball team and two of the boys left the team so my friend Anna asked some guys she worked with to join the team and one of them was Darren!

How long have you been together? 5 years

Do you have a proposal story? We went to St Kilda where we had our first date. I had just finished night duty and Darren said he wanted to go somewhere where we could walk on the beach. I was tired and grumpy so he kept calling off the proposal in his head until I perked up. We walked to the end of the pier and he gave me a hug from behind then opened the ring box in front of my face. I got such a surprise I nearly sent the ring flying into the water!

The Wedding
What was your wedding date? 24th March 2016

Location (Ceremony and Reception)

Where? Zonzo Estate, Yarra Valley

What made you choose there?  Delicious food, amazing view, lovely atmosphere and rustic feel. We loved the long tables and the fact that the food is made to be shared.
How was the weather on the day? A little bit rainy in the morning, slightly overcast but the boys were still able to play golf! Overcast but not cold.
What made you decide to get married on this particular date? The Thursday before Good Friday so most of our nearest and dearest could stay down in the Yarra Valley over Easter with us. Lots of people thanked us because they “had to” take another day off work.

The Wedding Details
Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What?
I made my veil. Our incredible friend Eva from Lulie Cakes made the cake! It stole the show and tasted every bit as delicious as it looked! One of the tiers was chocolate and salted caramel with nutella icing. She is a wiz!

Bridal Party

Bridesmaids – who/relationship? Kajal and Sarah (school friends). My older sister Steph and younger sister Sarah (maid of honour).

Groomsmen – who/relationship? James and Lachy (physio friends) and school friends Andrew and Dan (Best Man)

Flower girls/Page boys – who/relationship? Absolutely adorable Harry (Dan’s son, Darren’s Godson)  and Archie our nephew. Wearing Bardot kids.

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? My older sister got married a few months before us and I went with her to an appointment at Karen Willis Holmes and LOVED the range that you had.

Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before?  I started following you on instagram after that and I had definitely heard the name. Also went to a wedding the year before and the bride’s dress was from KWH.
How many gowns did you try? The first one I tried on was the one I went with… But I would have tried on about 10 afterwards!! I had it narrowed down to two dresses so I went away and thought about it but I couldn’t go passed the Dahlia gown. I didn’t look at any other shops. Why confuse myself!?
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)?  High St, Armadale
What did you especially like about your gown? The back! I have always loved interesting backs on dresses. I also liked that it was a bit different to anything I had seen before and I felt so comfortable. It was very “me”!

Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? Jayson Brundson

Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? Jack London

What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party?  I didn’t feel I needed much with the high neckline of the dress. My drop pearl earrings were Mum’s.

Where did you get your shoes from? Alan Pinkus

Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? I made my own veil with beautiful Italian lace from Kleggs and some very soft tulle. Mum helped me, we hand stitched it – I started at one end and she started at the other and we had many-a-wine while doing so (white wine only of course!)

What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? In terms of budget, we prioritised 5 things that we wanted to spend on the most (venue, flowers, photographer etc) and then we could allocate the rest of the funds to the other details. Ask favours! Most people love having a role… My Uncle’s drove the wedding cars and they loved it! But mostly just enjoy the planning!

What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Keep an open mind! Even if a bridal consultant urges you to try something on and it doesn’t seem like your style, you might be surprised!

Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day.
