How did you meet your (now) husband? At a church camp 11 years ago. My 2 besties and I didn’t have a lift home, and it was brought to our attention that this guy named Jono had 3 seats available in his little Barina which had a broken radio. My friends forced me to sit in the front seat, and we chat the whole way home! It started an amazing friendship for the next 7 years.
How long have you been together? 4 years
Do you have a proposal story? It came as a complete surprise to me. We were walking along the noosa headland on sunset and ducked into a little cove to take a self timer selfie. Little to my knowledge, Jon had set up a video instead of a photo! I was posing ready for the picture and he knelt down next to me and proposed! So sneaky of him to get it all on camera!
What was your wedding date? 17 June 2016
Location (Ceremony and Reception)
What made you choose there? The church for the ceremony was an easy choice for us as it felt like home. I had seen Lightspace every day on the way home from work on the train and had looked it up previously. I love the industrial feel and how we could hire in everything to make our wedding really unique and ‘us’!
How was the weather on the day? Absolutely perfect sunny Winter Day. We made it in just before the cold snap hit Brissy!
What made you decide to get married on this particular date? We wanted a quick engagement, and this particular date was about 4 months from the proposal! People said we were crazy, but we wouldn’t have done it any other way!
The Wedding Details
Theme? We created the reception inspired by a whimsical industrial theme. We used naked wooden tables, greenery, candles and lots of fairy lights. We were blessed to use these two amazing light up trees either side of our bridal table which were an amazing feature!
Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? Pinterest is always a brides best friend. Our event stylist, Ainsley Millar from Élan + Co was incredible at taking my ideas and making them a reality!
Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What? As a graphic designer, I was able to use my skills to create a running theme throughout the wedding. I used a similar theme throughout my invites, welcome sign, orders of service and table seating chart. I also hand lettered the name cards for each guest using watercolours. I also made our backdrop for the Ceremony from a combination of ideas I found on etsy.

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? I had been there previously with other friends who were brides and love so many of the gowns! I knew I had to come back when it was my turn.
Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? On many other brides, whether friends /or friends of friends.
How many gowns did you try? Approximately 20 I think… About 4 at Karen Willis Holmes. I had so much difficulty deciding between 2 of them!
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? The Brisbane store in Paddington.
What did you especially like about your gown? That is was different to any other dress I had ever seen. I really wanted something unique and from an Australian Designer.
Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? PS Frocks. The girls wore the multi way dress in light grey.
Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? We brought all seven of the suits from Roger David. The boys wore the ‘Leo’ which is a rich navy.
What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party? I wore the 'Genevieve' overlay over my 'Anya' gown. It was so dreamy! The bridesmaids wore drop chain pearl earrings I brought from etsy. I wore Samantha Wills moonstone tear drop earrings which matched my dress perfectly.
Where did you get your shoes from? My Shoes were Tony Bianco ‘Avar’ in Coyote.
Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? I ordered a headpiece on etsy which came all the way from Lithuania! It was handmade using Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls. I really wanted an asymmetrical headpiece to anchor my veil too. My veil was a fine tulle full length veil from local bridal designer Emily Beatrice. Together, it was more beautiful than I had hoped!
What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? Don’t get caught up on the little details. Plan the wedding exactly how you and your partner want it, and have some of your personality reflected in these plans. As soon as you feel yourself stressing out, take a step back and use some perspective. A part of me was looking forward to marriage so much more than the wedding itself!
What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Keep an open mind. Try every style on! That is the only way to really see what truly suits you and your figure.
Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day? My Grandma ‘Nanny’ passed away from a lengthy battle with Cancer about 14 years ago. She was a dressmaker, and with her caring and loving nature she enjoyed anything that made her grandchildren smile. Right before she passed away, she was saying how much she would miss seeing her grandkids walk down the aisle. I know she would have absolutely loved my gown! I had a small brooch with a picture of Nanny on her wedding day attached to my bouquet. She felt so close to me all day!
Florist – Amy DeLuca, a local private florist. A friend used her at her wedding, and I fell in love with her creativity! She was absolutely a joy to work with.
Photographer – Greta Elizabeth. Recommended to me by another photographer, she made us feel so relaxed and it was lovely meeting her prior to our wedding during our engagement photoshoot. She is super talented!
Videographer – Dave Martin. A guy from our church with an incredible eye for video. Such a blessing to have him video our wedding day!
Music – Spotify
First Dance – 'XO' by John Mayer, followed by ‘Cheek to Cheek’ by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. I had to have a special song to dance with my smooth-jazz-loving Papa.
MC – Travis ‘Danger’ Grainger and Jesse ‘Jesspots’ Austin. Two of Jon’s close friends and the funniest duo we know!
Celebrant – Pastor Billy Williams. He is an indigenous Pastor who is so incredibly laid back and relaxed about everything. He is a lover of the country and outdoors which resonates well with Jon and I!
Stationery – All myself! Breleigh designs. Printed by the amazing people at Colour Chiefs in Windsor!
Menu – Sit Down Banquet style food created by our amazing caterer Penny of Penelope's Pantry. She was recommended by a friend and we are so glad we had her and her team cater our reception and afternoon tea. The food was beyond delicious and just kept coming out, platter after platter!!! Fair to say we had no hangry guests!
Cake – A longtime family friend Steph Hallett. Steph is like my second Mum, and the most amazing cook. She made an incredible 3 tier cake covered in white chocolate chards (Jon’s fav!). There was one caramel mud, one mud and one white choc mud layer. She used 30 eggs and 1.8 kilos of white chocolate! She covered in beautiful fresh flowers. The finished product was mind blowing!!
Hair – Sarah Holloway, local hair dresser and stylist. The sweetest girl you have ever met, and super talented stylist!
Make up – Hayley Irwin. Hayley is a magician. Jon’s one request was that I still looked like the same girl, and Hayley’s make up is so beautifully natural and flawless. She is so easy going and was a breath of fresh air on the day!
Event Styling – The wedding reception could not have been possible without the help of the amazing Ainsley Millar of Élan + co events. One of the most reliable people I know, I could trust Ainsley 110% to create an amazing feel at our reception. She co-ordinated the entire bump in and out process, and decorated the tables to perfection using small details like bunches of rosemary with the name place cards! Took so much weight off my shoulders and created the most memorable receptions!
Lighting – Ash Neuendorf of High Impact Lighting hung the amazing fairy lights and supplied us with the beautiful light up trees.
Tables – We used Brandition for all of the table hire and linen. Kion was incredibly helpful!
Waitstaff – We hired our waitstaff through Hire Waiters Brisbane. Martin Roberts was fantastic to deal with!
Crockery and Catering Machinery hire – Bob’s Hire.
