Carly & Adam's Relaxed and Rustic Wedding

How did you meet your (now) husband?  Adam and I both met at work as we both work on the same hospital and became great friends. After about a year and half things started to become more that just friend for us both but neither of us really had the confidence to ask each other out. There was a lot of two and froing (and a few bottles of wine for Adam birthday J) we eventually admitted to each other how we felt. It was the best night ever (till our wedding night) as we both knew there was something special there.

How long have you been together? We have been together 4 1/2 years

Do you have a proposal story? A lot of our friends had been getting married and getting engaged and our wedding kept getting being brought up in general conversation, I started to get a little restless. I throw Adam and big superhero fancy dress party for his 30th and in the middle of the party I asked Ad ‘when can we get married?’ and He replied ‘ahhh lets just do it!’. I don’t think either of us focused on it that night but the next day I asked ‘ remember you said something about us getting married…’ Adam did go down on one knee and proposed in the more traditional way after he had gotten my engagement ring and from there on in we were wedding planning.

The Wedding

What was your wedding date?  28th February 2015

Location (Ceremony and Reception)

1.     Where?  Baxter Barn

2.     What made you choose there?  When we got to Baxter Barn we both knew that was where we wanted to get married. We loved the rustic nature of the venue; the open space and the relaxed feel that we wanted on our day.

3.     How did you find it? With the majority of my (Carly) family living overseas, I asked Lettuce and Co to help with some of the arrangements for the wedding.  They very kindly found many options for us to hold our wedding but as soon as we go to to Baxter we both fell in love.

How was the weather on the day?  The morning was quite overcast with showers but in the afternoon it brighten up to 30 degrees and glorious. About 20:30 to 21:00 a massive storm hit our reception with 100km/hr winds all the power was cut from the venue. The Gelato cart arrived just in the knick of time with a light source and everyone made the most of the rest evening dancing to acoustic music and eating gelato.

What made you decide to get married on this particular date? I love the summer months and we always wanted an outside wedding. February was the best chance we would have of having a hot sunny day.

The Wedding Details

Theme ?  Adam and I kept our engagement a secret for a little while, as we really didn’t know what type of wedding we wanted. We didn’t know if any of my family would make it from overseas, if we wanted to elope, have it internationally or a big lavish wedding.  Very quickly we both realized that a more relaxed wedding suited us and we need to mix both the Aussie in Adam and the British in me. Once we met with Lettuce & co we knew we wanted an outdoor reception with a BBQ & an English fate feel to it.

Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from?  I think I used everything I could possible find!! I used Pintrest, Cosmo bride, Hello May Etc. I also used the website notonthehighstreet.com for inspiration but got a heap of things shipped over from my mum’s in England.

Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What? Lettuce and Co did most of styling so I think I got away quite lightly with having to make anything myself. It was amazing to have the relief of knowing someone had all of the major things components covered while we could concentrate on enjoying spending time with my family and friends who had traveled so far. It also meant Adam and I could enjoy the process of being engaged, the wedding build up and set up on the wedding day without too much stress. Lettuce  and Co were truly incredible in helping us through every step of the wedding process.

Bridal Party

Bridesmaids – who/relationship?  I have moved many countries in my life and have so many very very special friends and sister’s really couldn’t choose any one from the other to be my bridesmaids. I think if I had to chose would have had about 10 lol.  It didn’t feel right to choose between them as all my girlfriends mean so so much too me whether they live near or far.

Groomsmen – who/relationship? Ad said to be when we were discussing bridesmaids/ groomsman ‘you are my best friend who else would I want up there with me’ and I guess that is when we knew that it being us the two of us was perfect.

Flower girls/Page boys – who/relationship? I have an 8-year-old sister and although she was not officially a flower girl, she was the runner to make sure Dad and I walked down the aisle at the right time and ended up with my bouquet most of the day.

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)

What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes?  I was looking a lot in Cosmo Brides and saw a few really nice dresses and looked at the website decided that I needed to get to KAREN WILLIS HOLMES to try on as many as I could.

Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? I seen them at the One Fine Day show and in Cosmo bride magazines and loved the look of all the different style of dresses.

How many gowns did you try? Oh I think about 8…… I could have bought all of them! I went back to KAREN WILLIS HOLMES to re look at all the different designs as we are having a party in England to celebrate our wedding in July. I loved all the different styles but in the end worked with Sarah and decided to cut my original dress into a more 1950’s relaxed style…. It’s going to be even more amazing the second time round.

Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)?  Armadale store. I totally loved this store and all the people that worked there just made you feel at ease and had so much enthusiasm for every customer. Big Shout out to Sarah…she was amazing in my first walk in that I requested her for all my fittings and she was a total God send. I may have had a few freak-outs about my dress but she took it all in her stride and made the dress of my dreams. Nothing was ever too much.

What did you especially like about your gown?  I loved that as the fittings took shape we could slowly alter little things, I got the back lowered, got buttons instead of corset, the hem, my bust level and nothing was ever too much. I loved that my dress wasn’t white, the different tulle layers, the small detailing in the lace and that I felt an absolute princess in my dress.

Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? Adam’s Brother got married the year before us and David Marcs in Moonee Ponds had done all the suits for the wedding. To Adam there was only one choice for where he would get his suit from, as it was a more relaxed feel he choose to have chinos rather than a full suit. The converse were a late edition but made total sense when we put everything together, very much Adam’s style!

What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party?  I stayed in a house with all my relatives that had travelled from England and the night before presented them all with a present each. I bought all the women dressing gowns with their names stitched into the back & all the boys got special socks to wear on the big day. I had some beautiful pearl earrings my late grandma had given me on and as soon as I saw the dress I knew I would wear them on my wedding day. My mother-in law gave me a stunning pearl bracelet that matched the earrings and I chose not to wear a necklace, as the neckline of the dress was just incredible. Knowing I was going to wear pearls on my wedding day, when I was last in England I visited a cute little jewelry shop in my hometown and bought my mum and sister’s matching pearl bracelets. I loved having something that tied us all together on the day and something they can all keep forever. All of Adam’s family got more individual present for all the love and help they had put into our day.

Where did you get your shoes from?  I got my shoes from Shoes of Prey online. I couldn’t decide on shoes and purchased my very last minute… I think they arrived the day before my first dress fitting. To look at they were a bit overwhelming but they were perfect when they were on. I needed a thick heal because of the outside ceremony and reception and the sparkles were a must! Blue is both a favorite colour of both Adam and I so just made sense we had matching blue shoes. To be able to design/customize your shoes to what you need was amazing and the service from Shoes of Prey was awesome!

Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from?  I got my veil from KAREN WILLIS HOLMES as well, it just seem to make sense and finish off the gown perfectly. I put fresh little daisies into the back of my hair rather than a headpiece and I loved it!

What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? I think for us it was great that we knew what we wanted before we told everyone we were engaged. It meant the day about us and was what we wanted rather than what others thought it should be. Be strong in what you want and not to please other people. For instance we had our photos before the ceremony so that we could send all the evening with our friends and family enjoying the party! Have fun and enjoy this special time….. Don’t stress it’s not worth it as really all that matters is you get to marry the man of your dreams <3 <3

What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Try on as many as you think you need to. Don’t stop till you have been to KAREN WILLIS HOLMES and found the most amazing dress!

Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day? We had some pretty major disasters on our wedding day and on the day we just enjoyed them. It wasn’t perfect but Ad and I got married with all our closed family and friends and it was ‘us’ and that is all we needed. A friend of mine said this too me ‘ just stop for one minute and look around you to take it in’ and I remember coming out of the bathroom and looking around and seeing the most amazing sight. The wedding we had imagined and worked so hard for with so many smiles, laughter and love, it’s the only moment I stood on my own all day and it is the clearest memory I cherish.

Something Old? My late grandma’s pearl earrings… it meant the absolute world to me to have a piece of her with me.

Something New? My incredible dress.

Something Borrowed? My grandma’s earrings again.

Something Blue? My mum had bought me a garter to wear on the day and was my something blue (as well as my sparkly blue shoes!)

Florist – First Impression Flowers. I have been going to Juliet for years to buy butches of flowers for our house and it made total sense that she be the one to do my wedding flowers. She listened to everything I asked for and delivered more than I expected…. Even came to the rescue the might before the wedding with an emergency plan for wet weather decoration. She again went above and beyond for me, thank you!!

Photographer – Jessie Hisco.  The most amazing guy and captured our day in the most beautiful photos! Jessie was incredible to work with and had an amazing relaxed and calm nature about him that made every challenge so easy to overcome. We an amazing asset to our day for sure J

Videographer – Preface Films. We asked Rochelle maybe 3 weeks before the wedding if they could film our day and we are so glad we did. They presented us with the most incredible video that both Adam and I will cherish forever.

Music – Ricky Muscat was the singer we hired and brought his band that was astounding.

First Dance – ‘ Stand by me’ by Ben E King. Spinning in my dress was just the best feeling.

MC – My Brother!

Celebrant – A life long family friend of the Fogarty family Desmond Lonergan. We loved having him involved made the ceremony just the extra bit special.

Stationary – Lettuce and Co organized these through English artist Aimee Prints illustrations. We loved the customized fun look we got for our invites really summed up Adam and I and the feel of our day even before the day had begun.

Menu – Baxter Barn did all the catering on site.

Cake – We went Lettuce and Co again for our cake and the result was amazing Sweet Empire did the most amazing custom lemon Zest and Vanilla bean naked cake with signature home made lemon curd and Swiss meringue buttercream. Sweet Empire also did a one off supply of delicious Raspberry meringue, Salted caramel & honeycomb & Chocolate & Hazelnut doughnuts for our dessert table. We can’t thank Cath enough.

Hair & Make-upGirl in the Green Scarf did the most wonderful job at my hair and make-up.

Wedding Bands – Adam’s parents are jewelers and sourced boutique rings for my engagement and bought our wedding rings.

Stylists/ planners – Lettuce  & Co did a remarkable job in making our wedding dreams a reality. They helped and supported both Adam and I through the whole wedding process, going above and beyond on many occasions. We owe them so much.

Gelato Van- Bianco Latte did an incredible job and the gelato was superb.
