How did you meet your partner? We met through friends, we were always moving in the same circles, knowing each other from afar and chatting every now and then but it was through our mutual love of music and The Simpsons that we really connected one year at a festival and the rest, as they say, is history.
How long have you been together? 8 years.
Do you have a proposal story? Our approach to an engagement was that we never really wanted one. We’d been together 7 years, lived overseas for 3 of those years and truly felt that we were already engaged or married in every sense of the word. The concept of a proposal and everything that comes with engagement seemed backward for us, so we decided to quietly organise our wedding without the engagement first. When everything was locked and loaded, we surprised our friends with a wedding invitation and news that we were, yes engaged, and getting married in 5 months!
What was your wedding date? 28th April 2017
Ceremony + Reception
Location? The Boathouse Palm Beach, NSW
What made you choose there? It was the first venue we looked at and was love at first sight. We wanted something casual and unique and a venue that required little ‘dressing up’ because it was already a beautiful place to be. Of course, The Boathouse is all of these things. The final piece of the puzzle was that the venue reminded us of our time in LA (where we lived for 3 years) so it was the perfect mesh of our lives in California and Sydney.
Because we loved the venue so much and the Boathouse team were so easy to work with, we decided to have the ceremony there too, in the front garden. Our ceremony ended up being at twilight because it was autumn and daylight savings had ended– the result of which far exceeded anything I had imagined, when I walked into the ceremony it was absolutely magical.
To make the most of the day, we also decided to do a first look which we held at the house we were staying in with 17 of our friends – it was a stunning property on Iluka Rd, opening out onto the Pittwater River. Our immediate family and closest friends were there to greet us after we’d seen each other for the first time and then we kicked off the festivities with champagne and photos.
How did you find it? Instagram of course.
How was the weather on the day? Clear and crisp!
Was there a reason you decided to get married on this date? It was the last one the Boathouse had available for 2017 and even though it was only 6 months away we thought YOLO let’s do it!
The Wedding Details
Theme? The theme was there was no theme.
Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? Mainly Instagram but I know what I like and what I don’t so I didn’t even buy a bridal magazine for inspiration.
Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so, what? None and I knew from the get go that we absolutely did not want a DIY wedding. That was the brilliance of The Boathouse, there is nothing that needs to be done because they have amazing taste and an amazing team to help bring your day to life.
Bridesmaids – who/relationship? Maid of Honour – My best friend Amelia Moyle
Groomsmen – who/relationship? Best Man – Pat’s best friend Daniel Osbourne
Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? I had seen the sequin gowns on Instagram which are stunning and thought KWH’s styles were modern, high-quality and well priced.
Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? Instagram and in the Paddington boutique.
How many gowns did you try? 5 at KWH
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? From Alexandria, Sydney.
What did you especially like about your gown? I realise that every woman hopes her gown is unique but I truly felt mine was because I had never seen one like it – the shape was dramatic and structured but the material was simple and elegant, which was the perfect juxtaposition. I loved the satin twill with the net inserts and wanted a bodice that accentuated my décolletage and back so when I saw the dress at KWH, I could not believe it, I literally thought: if I had dreamed up my dress this would 100% be it.
Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? KITX
Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? Paul Smith
What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party? Sarina Suriano
Where did you get your shoes from? Farfetch
Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? KWH veil (something I did not think I’d want but when I tried it on with my dress it was a done deal).
What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? Surrender to the process (also my advice on anything in life). A wedding can be as easy or complicated as you want it to be.
Also our First Look and pre-drinks with family and close friends was such a great way to start the day.
What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? The experience is just as important as the dress. I started my search at salons that had zero focus on a quality customer experience and as a result, I was initially convinced I would never find something I would be happy with. My experience at KWH was a huge part of the reason I bought my gown from them - so indulge yourselves ladies and make sure you choose a salon that will give you a beautiful experience!
Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day.
Something Old? The clutch my mother in law used on her wedding day!
Something New? All of the things I wore (dress, shoes, jewelry etc)
Something Borrowed? The clutch.
Something Blue? A ring
