Hillary + Ross' Cape Cod Beach Wedding

Background

How did you meet your partner? Ross and I met on our study abroad trip to Salamanca, Spain in our junior year in college.  He was attending college in Maine and I was attending college in Los Angeles.  We were friends for a few years and started to date the summer after we graduated from college when we were both back in Boston, MA (both of our families are from the Boston area).

How long have you been together? We have been together for 7 years.

Do you have a proposal story? Yes!  A few days before, Ross told me there was a new seal exhibit at the New England Aquarium that we should check out.  The aquarium was the location of our first date.  We went on a Saturday to the aquarium and checked out all the fish and animals.  There is a large tank in the middle of the aquarium with a spiral walkway around the tank.  We walked all the way up the large central tank to the very top.  When we were at the top, Ross got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.  I said yes! Afterward, he said we would go to dinner the two of us in the North End of Boston where we ate dinner on our first date. When I walked up to the rooftop patio of the restaurant, all of our family and close friends were there to surprise me!

The Wedding

What was your wedding date? June 24, 2017

Ceremony

Location? Our ceremony was on the beach in East Dennis Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  This particular beach is next to a family cottage I have been going to since I was born and I go back every summer to spend time there.  It is my favorite place in the world and Ross has come to love spending time there as well.

What made you choose there? We chose the beach for its significance for me and my family and to commemorate Ross and my time at this beach together.

How did you find it? This beach house has been in my family since the 1920s.

Reception

Location? The Dennis Inn (Dennis, MA)

What made you choose there?  We chose the Dennis Inn because it was local and because of their professional yet laid-back attitude.  Also, it was important to us that our wedding was the only wedding that occurred onsite that weekend. The Inn has just been renovated and looks beautiful.  Janene and Fred were fantastic!

How did you find it? We knew that we wanted to get married on the Cape, so we looked at all the venues around East Dennis.

How was the weather on the day? There were thunderstorms in the morning!  They cleared just in time, about an hour or two before the ceremony was scheduled to take place.  The storms cleared into a beautiful, sunny day.  We couldn’t have been happier with the surprise that the weather turned out to be absolutely gorgeous!

Was there a reason you decided to get married on this date? No, we knew we wanted to get married in the summer as that is the most beautiful time on the cape.

The Wedding Details

Theme? Nautical Rustic theme.  The ceremony was more nautical and the reception more rustic theme.  Colors: Navy, gold, and jade green.

Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? A lot of Pinterest!

Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What? A few frames and decorations.

Bridal Party

Bridesmaids – who/relationship? 7 bridesmaids: my sisters and best friends from elementary school, high school, and college.

Groomsmen – who/relationship? 5 groomsmen: Ross’ brother and 4 best friends from growing up.

Flower girls/Page boys – who/relationship? My niece (3 years old) was our flower girl and nephew (1 year old) was the ring bearer.

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)

Hillary wore the Fontanne gown, bought from the New York Karen Willis Holmes boutique.

What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? Looking online at many different kinds of dresses, I immediately fell in love with Karen Willis Holmes use of sequins and beading.  I love sparkle and sequins, so I knew I had to have one of KWH’s gowns for my wedding I just didn’t know how I would decide which one to choose!

Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? I tried on the selection of gowns first at Ceremony in Boston.

How many gowns did you try? In total, about 30. Of KWH gowns I tried about 3 at Ceremony and then probably 7-10 at KWH New York.

Where did you purchase your gown from? Karen Willis Holmes New York boutique

What did you especially like about your gown? I had “the feeling” when putting on the Fontanne gown, I knew it was the one.  My favorite part of the gown is the contrast in different patterns and of the beads and sequins.   It reminded me a little of a shell you might find on the beach.  The slim fit and train are beautiful.  I really love everything about the dress!

Fashion

Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? J.Crew

Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? Bonobos

What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party?  I chose a fingertip veil and simple stud earrings.  The bridesmaids wore gold shoes of their choice and stud earrings.

Where did you get your shoes from? BHLDN

Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? Yes, a fingertip veil from a local Boston store, Vows.

What advice would you give brides organising their wedding? Enjoy the planning process and break it up into manageable pieces.  We had a little over a year and a half engagement and that allowed us to do little bits of planning and then take a break. Delegate what you can!

What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Try on different styles but go with your gut- when else do you get to try on so many kinds of gowns?!

Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day. Our dance party was the highlight in many ways- we had large glow sticks passed out to guests to really take the party up a notch!
