How did you meet your (now) husband? We met when I started playing netball at the same club leigh played football. We had mutual friends and started out as friends first. We were set up by two of our friends, and our relationship grew from there.
How long have you been together? We have been together for almost 8 and a half years
Do you have a proposal story? Leigh took me away to mildura on my university holidays. He had this elaborate plan to book us in for a massage at the day spa, and while I was in having mine he was going to get a ring box from the jewellery store. He had also planned to take me out for dinner on a paddlesteamer and propose to me there. Unfortunately he was unable to get a massage appointment at the day spa, and the river was close for dredging so the paddlesteamers weren’t operating. So we were having a pie on the balcony of the mildura bakery when leigh told me he wanted me to be his wife and asked me to marry him. He then proceeded to tell me his original plan which made me laugh and we spent the rest of the day picking a beautiful solitare ring.
What was your wedding date? 29th November 2014
Location (Ceremony and Reception)
Where? Ceremony was at the Hopkins Falls at Wangoom and our reception was held at Simon’s Waterfront in Warrnambool
What made you choose there? I was looking on the internet trying to find a ceremony location, and randomly decided to search for wateralls in the Warrnambool area and the Hopkins fals came up. I went for a drive out there and just knew it would be perfect for what we wanted. With our reception venue we went to Simon’s waterfront for coffee and to dicuss our options for the reception when Simon ad Rose the owners ended up sitting down and running us through what they offered for weddings. They were so helpful throughout our planning that we just knew we had picked the right venue
How was the weather on the day? The weather was absolutely perfect!!!!! We could not have wished for a better day. It was not too hot and not too cold and a beautiful sunny day. The perect wether for an outside wedding. The temperature that night was still mild enough for people to be able to enjoy the atmosphere of the beer garden overlooking the beach.
What made you decide to get married on this particular date? Due to my university commitments, and Leighs farming responsibilities we had two weekend s to choose from. The day we got married or the week before. We decided on the 29th because it gave us more time to get ready after I finished a uni placement the week before.
The Wedding Details
Theme? We planned our wedding ourselves. Our bridal party had a very old Hollywood feel about it with both the boys and the bridesmaids in navy. We picked jewellery and accesorys to accentuate the elegant and classic look. Our decorative theme had a very rustic feel as we are off a farm and we are surrounded by beautiful gumtrees at home. Leigh made a beautiful arch from sugar gum from our farm which we used in our ceremony. It really looked beautiful on the day we also had slabs of gum lining the aisle with little jars and candles as well as photos of leigh and I at the beginning of the aisle. Our venues required very little decorating because the provided guests with stunning views.
Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? I got a lot of my inspiration from Bridal magazing ‘Hello May’ and pinterest.
Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What? As I said above leigh spent the time to make us alovely wooden arch and aisle decorations for the ceremony. Also I didn’t have something blue for the day so the bridesmaids snuck my shoes away and added a J & L sticker to the bottom and surprised me the morning of the wedding.

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? I saw the ‘Jacinta’ Gown in Cosmopolitan Bride and fell in love and just knew I wanted to try dresses on at the boutique.
How many gowns did you try? I think I tried on close to 10 gowns on the day. But my dress was the last dress I tried on at the last shop and as soon as I had the Alexandra gown on, it was like I could finally breathe because it had found THE ONE!!! i fell in love with it instantly.
Where did you purchase your gown from? I purchased my gown from the Armadale boutique in Melbourne
What did you especially like about your gown? I loved that it wasn’t your typical bridal gown. I didn’t want the big flowing dress. It was different and elegant and something that wouldn’t date. I just knew that when I look back on my wedding when I am 80 years old I will still love that dress as much as I did the day I married my man.
Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? We got the girls dresses from ‘Swish’ in Chapel Street Melbourne. The staff were so helpful, and I would never have picked those dresses from the rack, without the staffs help we never would have ended upwith those dresses and they were just perfect.
Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? We got the guys suits from ‘Woodstock Menswear’ in mebourne CBD.
What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party? I picked out the Bridesmaids jewellery for them as a gift. I got theirs and my jewellery and hairpiece from ‘Lovisa’ at Chadstone. It all fell together and I found the perfect pieces. The gir;s were also very surprised and loved what I picked. It all teamed well with the dresses.
Where did you get your shoes from? My mother owns ‘Mad About Shoes’ in Hamilton Victoria. So needless to say I got my shoes from there.
Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? As above with the jewellery
What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? I would encourage brides to relax and enjoy the process of planning their big day. I would also recommend that brides take time out on their big day to step back and appreciate the day for what it is. It goes by so quickly and befpre you know it its time to go home. Lap it up and enjoy every minute of it.
What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? The best thing I could suggest would be to go in with out a plan!! I went in with an open mind I knew of dresses I liked but I tried dresses of all shapes and sizes, because sometimes the dress u think you want onc on is not all you thought it would be, and the dress you think looks awful on a hanger is the most beautiful dress on.
Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day.
We had my fathers Chev as our bridal car. We also had a beighe EH wagon that my uncle sold to my dad just before he passed away just after our engagement party. We had it there as a way of having him there with us. We also had my fathers friends blue EH wagon.
Something Old? I wore my great great grandmothers wedding ring, which my grandmother aunties and mother all wore to their weddings.
Something New? My beautiful KAREN WILLIS HOLMES Gown
Something Borrowed? As above with something Old
Something Blue? The stickers the girls put on my shoes
