How did you meet your partner? We originally met in grade school when I lived in Minnesota, where my husband grew up. My family moved to the east coast after 4th grade, and it took another 18 years for my husband to reach out via Facebook, ask how I was doing. We spoke over social media and text for a few months before we could meet in Philadelphia for our first date.
How long have you been together? 3 years
Do you have a proposal story? We went to Santorini, Greece for vacation and Jon had set up a private dinner on our balcony with my favorite flowers (peonies) at the dinner table. They brought out a cake that had ‘will you marry me’ written on it!
What was your wedding date? 07.08.2017
Ceremony + Reception
What made you choose there? There is an ivy covered stone wall where we held the ceremony. That wall sold it for me. The reception was just over the wall in their field and the scenery was beyond beautiful.
How did you find it? Pinterest! I saw the picture of the wall and just had to find it.
How was the weather on the day? Absolutely gorgeous! We couldn’t believe it because it had rained earlier that week and the east coast can be so hot and humid in the summertime. The humidity was significantly less than usual, there was a beautiful breeze and the clouds looked like they were painted on. We were so lucky for such a beautiful day.
Was there a reason you decided to get married on this date? Not one in particular
The Wedding Details
Theme? Light grey, pale blush & hints of gold
Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? We drew it from the venue. Colors that would look beautiful within the greenery of the venue and complimented summer without being too overwhelming
Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What? I got most of the items from Etsy after we had to part ways with our wedding planner. I pick everything and put it together myself, but used vendors for all the items.
Bridesmaids – who/relationship? MOH - my sister, Kate Allen - was our neighbor when we first moved to Minnesota 22 years ago, Samantha Bloom - best friend since grade school, Catie Merrick - best friend from high school, Audrey Rodriguez and Jill Gruys - friends from work.
Groomsmen – who/relationship? Best Man - Ryan Baker his best friend from elementary school, Eric Johnson and Ryan Chuba from the same school, JP Gavinski, Tim Jarmusz, Brett Valentyn were friends from college.
Flower girls/Page boys – who/relationship? Only ring bearers, our two nephews Brecken Jones (on my side) and Harrison Lapham (on my husband’s)
Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? I had been searching for gowns online and came to love all of the KWH gowns that I saw.
Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? Just online and the ones I tried on.
How many gowns did you try? Probably about 15-20
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? B.Loved Bridal, a boutique in Columbus, OHIO
What did you especially like about your gown? The beading detail on the bodice had a classic yet Gatsby-like beauty to it that set it apart from the rest. It was simple yet unique, classic but modern.
Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? They rented from The Black Tux
What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party? I told the bridesmaids they could wear any shoes they wanted to as long as they were gold or nude. I chose a simple gown with a beaded hair comb sewn into it. I kept the rest of the accessories simple as I did not want to distract from the gown and the overlay during the ceremony.
Where did you get your shoes from? Amin Abdul Jillil
Did you wear a veil/headpiece? The veil I got from B.Loved Bridal and the beaded comb that I sewed into it was from Nordstrom
What advice would you give brides organising their wedding? You know what you like, and you know your styles. If you have a planner, don’t let them convince you otherwise. Also, enjoy the planning process! You will be married for the rest of your life, but you will (hopefully) only plan a wedding once. Be prepared for people to give their opinions without asking. You can nod politely but know in your heart that this day is for you and your future husband. You all should do exactly what you want.
What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Don’t do something because you feel like you have to. Don’t get a huge gown if you don’t feel comfortable and it doesn’t suit your personality. Pick something that will compliment your venue and your wedding activities. If you are going to be dancing all night, keep that in mind. Being uncomfortable all night is not a memory that you want to have for your wedding.
Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day.
My mother’s wedding ring had three stones in it, and she exchanged the middle stone for a blue sapphire so that my sister and I could use it for these items. My sister and my mother tied it to my bouquet.
