Lara & Mick's Colourful Mexican Wedding

How did you meet your (now) husband? We went to highschool together

How long have you been together? About 14 years (Since grade 10 - with a few short breaks in between)

Do you have a proposal story? It happened on the 12.12.12 at midday – we had just left our jobs and sold everything we owned to take off around the world; we went for a beautiful long walk up to the Noosa headland as one of our final days in Australia. When we reached the tip, Ironically named Hell’s Gate, he pulled out a ring box from under the towel that he’d been holding in his hand the whole walk – I hadn’t even noticed.

The Wedding

What was your wedding date? 9th August 2014

Location (Ceremony and Reception)

1.     Where?     Cotton Tree Park (over looking the water) at Cotton Tree (Maroochydore, QLD) and the reception was across the road at the Prickly Piñata Mexican Cantina

2.     What made you choose there? It all came about quite perfectly; we definitely envisioned a relaxed ceremony outdoors by the water, we wanted something different and fun for our reception, and Michael wanted tacos for dinner at our wedding. We had always liked Cotton Tree park, and while we were travelling oversees we heard that a super cute Mexican restaurant had opened up across the road from the park – and that’s when the location of the events fell into place!

 3.     How did you find it? How was the weather on the day? The sky was so dark…and the rain held off right until the moment when we said “I Do”. I didn’t even notice it was raining on us though…too much excitement!

What made you decide to get married on this particular date? It’s 2 days after my birthday – Michael felt confident he wouldn’t forget the date for anniversaries if it was that close to my birthday, and I felt that I would be able to milk big combined birthday and anniversary presents out of it, like oversees holidays

The Wedding Details

Theme ? It was a bright, colourful, crazy, youthful Mexican Fiesta! The venue was already highly colourful and eclectic, and our wedding planner (Amey Mejak of Pack a Perfect Party) geniously simplified and dressed it with a level of sophistication to say wedding but still keep it fun and light.

Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? Amey set up a Pinterest board for us to share; it’s now public at -  https://www.pinterest.com/packaparty/m-l-wedding/

Because Michael and I were travelling the world while the wedding was being planned, it was a great forum to share ideas through.

Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What? Our wedding favours to guests; home made Mexican seasoning and home made chilli hot chocolate mix

Bridal Party

Bridesmaids – who/relationship? My sister (Kirsten Baumback) and my two best friends Samantha Pearcey and Leonie Christison

Groomsmen – who/relationship? Michael’s best friends – Ian Dale, Luke McGuire and Nick Kendrick

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)

What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? A gorgeous dress I had seen in a magazine from years before. I knew it wouldn’t be there anymore but I knew there had to be something special.

Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? Bridal mags, pinterest and driving past the store.

How many gowns did you try? Only about 3 think (in the KWH store), all up in the search for a dress -  including other stores – about 6. I didn’t actually want a wedding dress – I was going to wear a really different Sass and Bide dress, but then I went into KWH (my mum and sister talked me in to trying on a wedding dress) and it was the first time I got that feeling of actually being a bride.

Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? KWH Paddington store (Sydney), the girls there were the absolute greatest I had come across – so lovely!

What did you especially like about your gown? It had a modern look to it, minimal but beautiful, the cups had a cool little pattern stitched on to them too, and then I borrowed one of the sales assistants bright and colourful necklace and put it around the waist of the dress and bam – that was the moment – fell in love with the dress.

Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? Bought the dresses from Shieke in the Wintergarden (Brisbane)

Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? Groom’s suit was custom made by the Cloakroom in Brisbane; the Groomsmen’s suits were a mixture of 1-piece items from Asos

What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party? I chose a gold witchery belt, Samantha Willis earrings and bangle, and thin wristband that my bridesmaids also had. The bridesmaids also had a waist belt from Sheike, and Aztec style earrings.

Where did you get your shoes from? Steve Madden

Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? Yes – a gorgeous halo of bright flowers that my wedding planner had created herself.

What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? Get help so that you are chilled out and actually looking forward to the day! We were so relaxed in the planning and lead up, we had great help from Amey Mejak of Pack a Perfect Party as our Wedding Planner, which meant everything was taken care of, and we were SO looking forward to enjoying the day! I hear so many brides-to-be say in the lead up "I can't wait for it to be over" because they stress over every little detail, and everything going perfectly. The day isn't about the details, the decor or everything going perfectly... In the end it's about the two of you being there, being stupidly in love, and all your favourite people being there in support.

What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Try on anything and everything. I wouldn’t have even noticed the dress I ended up in – it was just that my sister had grabbed it off the rack and liked it, and wanted me to try it on.

Something Old? A small pair of silver bells wrapped around my bouquet that my grandmother used on her wedding day.

Something New? The dress!

Something Borrowed? My great grandmother’s diamond engagement ring (also something old)

Something Blue? Flowers in my halo & bouquet

To start with, it was the absolute creative genius Amey Mejak at Pack a Perfect Party who made the crazy ideas work so perfectly, like having a live donkey and a mariachi band lead us into our ceremony! Her ideas were incredible (like the custom piñata), and at no point did she ever make out like something was not going to work – anything was possible! She also did ALL the flowers etc herself. She is SUCH a talent, I can not give her enough praise!

Photographer - Stewart Ross

Music – An amazingly entertaining Mariachi Band  while guests waited brides arrival, and also while photos were happening.

We had a DJ at the reception; Our wedding RSVPs requested guests respond with their favourite songs, so the whole night was a mix of everyones most loved tunes – it resulted in a hell of a lot of crazy dancing by our guests!

First Dance – Happy by Pharrell Williams (We went to private dance classes for a few weeks and learnt a fun choreographed dance. We hadn't told a single soul we were doing it and surprised everyone on the night. It was an amazing moment seeing everyones faces)

MC – Didn’t have one in particular – family and friends took turns grabbing the mic to announce certain things or to make a speech – it was a pretty relaxed affair
