Lia & Derek's Whimsical Melbourne Backyard Wedding

How did you meet your (now) husband? We met through friends around 10 years ago.

How long have you been together? 4.5 years

Do you have a proposal story? I was surprised with cheese, flowers, wine, a very nervous Derek and a proposal.

The Wedding
What was your wedding date? 5 March 2016

Location (Ceremony and Reception)

Ceremony: Maranoa Gardens in Balwyn

Reception: Derek’s family home in Ivanhoe

What made you choose there?
Ceremony: We had been looking for an outdoor venue and as soon as we saw it we knew it was perfect. A small, secluded native garden, which fit perfectly with us and our theme.

Reception: The backyard was the perfect venue for us as Derek’s house is quite sentimental to his family plus it has these beautiful gardens and gum trees that matched the ceremony location and theme. We wanted a reception where we could have all of our favourite things (good food, live music, ice cream, cheese, lots of laughs and endless possibilities)

How did you find it? Derek found Maranoa Gardens
How was the weather on the day? Absolutely perfect!
What made you decide to get married on this particular date? It is a beautiful time of year and felt like the right time for us.

Bridal Party

Bridesmaids – who/relationship? They were my 3 best girlfriends

Groomsmen – who/relationship? Derek’s best mate and our two brothers

Flower girls who/relationship? My niece, Mia

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? I have always loved her gowns and style

Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? Yes, in blogs and photos
How many gowns did you try? I tried a few to get the right style for me but as soon as I tried this Karen Willis Holmes Aster dress on I knew it was the perfect dress and didn’t look any further.
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? High St Armadale
What did you especially like about your gown? The Aster was the first dress where I could actually see myself and felt comfortable and special in.

Who is your bridesmaid dress supplier? I found the dress’s online

Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? Myer

What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party? I had Anna from Elysian Creations make my earrings, headpiece and bridesmaids earrings

Where did you get your shoes from? Mollini

Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? I purchased a veil with my dress and a headpiece which Anna from Elysian Creations designed

What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? Stick to what you love, this is the one time it is really about you and your partner so do what you feel comfortable with and it will all work out in the end

What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? Be open minded, try different styles, laugh, take emergency snacks and go to Karen Willis Holmes!

Something Old? My grandmother's wedding band

Something New? My Dress

Something Borrowed? My mothers handkerchief

Something Blue? My mothers handkerchief

Florist – Floretta by Grace. I have had a crush on her work for ages so she was always going to be my first choice. She was amazing to work with and our flowers were stunning

Photographer – Georgia Wiggs. We found her online and couldn’t have been happier with her. Her photos look amazing and she was so much fun to have around on the day!

Music – Baker Boys. Derek’s cousins wife runs the Baker Boys so she helped us put together the perfect band for us and we were lucky enough to have her singing and mc for us

First Dance – Forever Young by Bob Dylan.

MC – Baker Boys – Derek’s cousins wife

Celebrant – Wendy McRae. We found Wendy on Easy Weddings and she was absolutely amazing! She was so patient and helpful with planning the ceremony and was incredibly on the day! She made our ceremony so much fun and something people are still talking about

Stationery - The Bride

Menu – Digging For Fire Bbq (food truck) We always wanted Digging for Fire to cater our wedding. Not only is the food truck totally our style but the food is the yummiest you are going to find. Also, Dave is the nicest man in the world to work with!

Cake – Miss Molly’s. I had Miss Molly’s Cakes (also a food truck) cater my hens party so she was the obvious choice to do our cake and it was so delicious!

Make up – Dana Leviston. I had been looking for a makeup artist who wasn’t too glitzy and over the top because I wanted something a little more natural / vintage. I found her work on a polkadot bride blog and loved it instantly! She is such a talented lady, heaps of fun to work with and she made us all look incredible!

Hair – Margeaux Vallantyne. Margeaux and Dana work as a team. When I had my hair trial with her I had so much fun, she is so down to earth and caring with the best style and detail for her craft. I couldn’t not have her!

Wedding Bands – Lorandi Master Jewelers. Lorandi did such an amazing job on my engagement ring that there was no way we would use any other jewler for our wedding bands. Andrew is so patient and just simply the best as what he does.

Bar – Beer Gypsies. These guys were such a great fit for our wedding. They really added to the atmosphere and the service went above and beyond

Car – Bucadi. The cars were in such great condition. Everyone loved them, their service was great and such lovely people to work with

Cheese Table – Harper and Blohm. This was a must have at our wedding! Best cheese ever!!

Marquees/furniture/dancefloor – Ace Party Hire. We couldn’t have done it without Ace! They provided so much of our furniture and setup for our reception. Great family business, great price and amazing to work with.

Ice cream cart – Bianco Latte – Also a must have! Best icecream ever and added such a fun element to our reception.

Styling assistance & Event Co-Ordinator – Miss Mooi. Because we were having our reception at a house and not a wedding venue it was great to have Stacey to help set up, keep a track on the day and make sure we didn’t miss anything major.
