How did you meet your (now) husband? We met at a work function.
How long have you been together? 4.5 years
Do you have a proposal story? It was pretty special. We travelled to Europe with my family for Christmas (2012). Samuel planned a date night in London – we went to dinner and a show. Dinner was at a Jamie Oliver restaurant overlooking St Paul’s Cathedral where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He was so nervous he went to the bathroom about 8 times during dinner.
What was your wedding date? 18 October 2014
Location (Ceremony and Reception)
Ceremony – Riverlife, Kangaroo Point.
Cocktail hour – We hired a boat for all of our guests for cocktail hour. They boarded at Riverlife, cruised the river for an hour before docking at Brett’s Wharf which was a short walk from our reception venue. We really wanted to keep our guests together and entertained while we got our photos taken.
Reception – Moda Events, Portside.
What made you choose there? We always wanted a beautiful spot on the river. We went along to a wedding showcase at Moda and it was love at first site. We loved that it had a beautiful function room for dinner and formalities, as well as a deck with an amazing view for more casual interactions. However what really sealed the deal for us was the food... It’s to die for!
The Wedding Details
Theme (if any – colours, features, etc.)? I would describe my wedding theme as pretty and modern with a hint of glamour. I had a stylist for the ceremony and another stylist for the reception but I was very hands on as I knew exactly what I wanted. There were a lot of different components to the wedding which I managed myself, it was quite stressful but it was amazing to see how it all came together.
My colour palette was soft pink, mint, white & grey.
1. Bridesmaids – who/relationship?
- MOH – Rebecca, sister
- Bridesmaid 1 – Shelby, best friend
- Bridesmaid 2 – Hayley, Cousin
2. Groomsmen – who/relationship?
- Best Man – Sam (yes, another Sam), best friend.
- Groomsmen 1 – Michael, Brother in law
- Groomsmen 2 – Jimmy, Brother in law
3. Flower girls/Page boys – who/relationship? We had our gorgeous niece Pippa as our flower girl
Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from? Pinterest, wedding magazines and facebook pages of various wedding suppliers. I actually found a photo of a bridal bouquet on a facebook page (of the florist I ended up booking) which ended up being my inspiration for a lot of the styling. I felt this one picture perfectly encapsulated everything I wanted my wedding to be, I took it with me to every appointment.
DIY projects: I made hangover packs for all of my guests. These included a bottle of water, chips, nurofen, alka-seltzer, eye drops, a sleeping mask and chewing gum.
I also made all of my favours myself (with the help of my bridesmaids).
Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes? I had been into the store before as a bridesmaid and absolutely fell in love with the gowns.
Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? Magazines, facebook etc.
How many gowns did you try? I tried on about 8 dresses before finding “the one”.
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? Karen Willis Holmes, Brisbane store.
What did you especially like about your gown? Without a doubt the skirt overlay! It’s so pretty and really ‘makes’ the gown. So many people commented they had never seen anything like it.
Who helped you pick the gown/who shopped with you? Mum and my three Bridesmaids.
Who is your brides maid dress supplier?BHLDN (designer: Jenny Yoo)
Where did you get the groom and groomsmen’s suits? We got the boys suits tailor made from The Black Label.
What accessories did you choose to finish your gown and also for those in your bridal party?
I finished the gown off with the KWH sequin and diamante belt. I had really minimal accessories as the dress was more than enough on its own. I wore some really simple tear drop earrings.
Where did you get your shoes from? Forever New.
Did you wear a veil/headpiece? Where did you get this from? My veil was from Karen Willis Holmes and I paired it with an Anna Campbell hair piece.
We often hear of difficulties experienced by the mother of the bride and groom in finding an appropriate outfit for the wedding day of their son/daughter, do you mind sharing where they found their outfits at all?
My mum bought a dress about four months before the wedding that she absolutely loved. About 4 weeks out she completely changed her mind and ended up going to a dress maker and getting a dress custom made. She wasn’t able to pick it up until two days before the wedding which totally stressed her out. It turned out to be PERFECT! She was so happy.
Highlight of the day- Seeing my grooms face as I walked down the aisle. He balled his eyes out through the entire ceremony and could barely say his vows!
Something old – I had my mum’s veil from her wedding wrapped around my bouquet.
Something new – A tiffany bracelet which was a gift from my groom.
Something borrowed – I ‘borrowed’ the song that my mum walked down the aisle to 30 years ago – Can’t help falling in love with you.
Something blue – I had my toe nails painted a soft blue.
Robes – Bras & things
Slippers – Cotton on body
Earrings – Etsy
Perfume – Marc Jacobs
Cigar & Ralph Lauren socks.
Florist – Lillipolen.
Photographer – Carly Tia.
Videographer – Hush Media
Music - Samuel’s cousin played during the ceremony and we had a DJ at the reception.
First Dance – Ed Sheeran – Thinking out loud
MC – A family friend – Brett McKewan
Celebrant – Chris North. I met Chris through work a couple of years ago and he was kind enough to come up from Sydney to officiate our wedding. He was amazing, so many guests commented on how great he was.
Stationery – Minted.com. I absolutely love their stuff and have recommended them to all of my friends. They are really reasonably priced for such a quality product.
Menu – Moda. The food was to die for. Our guests absolutely raved about it.
Bombonieres - Mini French apothecary jars filled with custom coloured M&M’s to suit our colour scheme. Our bonbonieres also doubled as place cards as we had tags made with our guests names which we tied onto the jars with twine.
Hair – The Powder Room
Make up – The Powder Room
Wedding Bands – Tiffany & co
Extra features – I had Moda set up a DIY Mimosa Bar on the deck for guests to help themselves. We had champagne with a selection of juices and fruits as ‘mix ins’.
