How did you meet your (now) husband? We met at work! I was working for my dad as a receptionist doing part time work at his office when Michael came in for a job interview.
How long have you been together? 5 Years
Do you have a proposal story? It was New Years Eve 2013. I’m not usually one for New Years celebrations however we still wanted to do something. We thought, why not go down to my parents place on the Gold Coast as they live on the beach. With about 6 close friends we drank champagne looking over the water until midnight. Then just before the fireworks began we decided to go down to the sand. I thought it was so strange because suddenly my sister (who was in bed!) and my Mum & Dad showed up- they were at another party. I remember thinking, why would they have gone to a party and then come home right before midnight on New Years! Well Michael kept telling me to hurry up and get down to the beach, but I wanted to wait for my Mum to take her shoes off and come down, seeing as she had left her party to come see us! Eventually he dragged me down to the sand and straight away asked me to marry him! Everyone had known except me the whole night, I couldn’t believe it.
What was your wedding date? December 13th 2014
Location (Ceremony and Reception)
1. Where? Brytarbri Farm, Beaudesert, QLD. This is actually my parent’s property, which we have just opened as a wedding venue.
2. What made you choose there? I always knew I wanted to have a wedding somewhere different where we weren’t sent home at midnight. Having it on our own property was a lot of work but was so worth it.
How was the weather on the day? The weather was the best you could have asked for. At first we were so worried being December and country Queensland it would be ridiculously hot. Then the week leading up to the wedding was torrential rain! Somehow on the day it was a little cloudy, the perfect temperature and we had no rain.
What made you decide to get married on this particular date? As I am still at university it was quite hard to find a date, as it had to be when I was on holidays. The end of year holiday season is always something Michael and I look forward to so we thought why not make it even better this year!
The Wedding Details
Theme (if any – colours, features, etc.)?
We didn’t want to go too country themed, even though we got married on a farm. We tried to keep it quite simple and clean looking with lots of white, wood and soft pastel pinks. The farm also operates as a Turf Farm during the week so we wanted to incorporate a bit of that into the wedding. We bought small turf animals like squirrels and rabbits that sat on the tables and other areas around the farm.
Where did you draw your inspiration/ideas from?
I had the help of the most amazing wedding stylist, Rachael from The Events Lounge. I had also done a lot of research looking at other real life weddings to determine what would suit both Michael and I.
Were any aspects of your wedding D.I.Y? If so What?
My bridesmaid Kirsten handmade 80 beautiful fans for the guests as we were thinking it could get up to 35 degrees. Unfortunately we didn’t need them!

Wedding Gown (the most important part!)
What made you decide to come into Karen Willis Holmes?
Looking online for shops in Brisbane, KAREN WILLIS HOLMES immediately made my list of places to visit. The dresses looked beautiful and different to your typical wedding dress. I spotted the Matilda (my dress) straight away, but I just assumed for some reason it wouldn’t suit me. I can’t tell you how glad I am that I tried it on anyway!
Where have you seen our gowns (if at all) before? In magazines and social media mainly.
How many gowns did you try? At KAREN WILLIS HOLMES about 4. In total (12-15)
Where did you purchase your gown from (which store or stockist)? Brisbane, Paddington. That was another aspect that helped choose my gown. The ladies there were so kind and professional. I had been to shops where the sales ladies were quite rude and clearly all they wanted to do was force you to buy a dress and get out of there, KAREN WILLIS HOLMES was on another level.
What did you especially like about your gown? I loved the corset waist, it was so slimming. I also loved the lace on the bodice, and he detail on the neckline, it was like nothing I have ever seen before.
What advice would you give brides organizing their wedding? If it’s at a private property or your own property- hire a planner! It is so hard to coordinate all of the suppliers, especially on the day. It was so lovely to be able to do all the fun stuff like choosing colours and furniture, and then not have to worry about negotiating the finer details.
What advice would you give brides searching for their wedding gown? You will know a good store as soon as you walk in the door. It is very easy to see the quality of the gowns as soon as you see them. The higher the quality, the better they fit/look on you.
Anything extra that is special or you would like to share about your big day? We wanted to do something different to your typical sit down, stay in one place. We had four different locations on the farm to keep everyone guessing. We started with the ceremony in the back yard of the farm house, canapés were in the front yard, the reception was in a marquee overlooking the lagoon and turf farm and lastly we surprised guests with the after party and dance floor in a wooden barn decorated with lights.
Something Old? My mum’s wedding ring
Something New? My dress
Something Borrowed? My mum’s ring again
Something Blue? The beautiful little blue bow KAREN WILLIS HOLMES had sown on the inside of my dress, the cutest little surprise!

Videographer – Joseph Willis. I had been watching his videos for months, before we decided to go with Joey. I would show all my friends and we would be in awe of how beautiful these films were.
